As 2010 comes to an end I am called to give thanks and count my blessings. I have had a productive year of health, love, school, creative endeavors including my floetry/hip hop and art and installations as well as visual art showings and many artistic firsts as well as some releasing and healing. I feel i am really coming into the artist and performer and M.C (mujer en ceremonia) I always was but never fully gave the chance to.
Throughout the year I traveled for art, organizing, and ceremonial purposes to Arizona, Texas, Oaxaca, Seattle, Mexico City, Hidalgo, Baja and met some amazing people along the way. Everywhere from very academic conferences to amazing spiritual xicana ones, hundreds of 1000’s of people marches to small collective art happenings and events. All have been amazing, connecting dots and points across Aztlan and showing me that I am on the path I should be…nothing a coincidence and everything happening just as it should.
Though not done with my M.F.A till May 2011, I have begun some projects and performances I am really excited about and feel that connect all who I am and give back to my community and the art circles. This year was also the founding of my personal website which explains a little bit about these various processes and the fruits of my labor.
This year I was lucky enough to have my 1st fashion or fe-shion show with the Fe line created along with my wonderful partner, Joel ‘rageone’ Garcia and featured on our online cultura store, Urban Xic.com. Our line has flourished and we are excited about continuing to provide culturally conscious clothing for the movimiento.
This year is the 1st time I shared the 1st installment of my one-wombyn show “Loteria Xicana” and I am excited to share the performances in new spaces and with new audiences and to add more to version 1.0. Along with this show, I have created more performance art characters and public interventions alone and with other artists/activists which I am really excited about including “Raramujer” and “the bumpin bici.” I’m looking forward to see more of these performances in the streets and out of the gallery and theater.
Having always been intersted in photography, I studied more and began to shoot more and have started a project documenting Mexican cowboy and charreria culture in Los Angeles. I have self-published my 1st book called “El Rancho” documenting this 1st installment of this project. Check out the book here: http://www.blurb.com/books/1785093
With my music, I am finally getting to the sound that I am looking for and continue to experiment with floetry, beats, spoken word and hip hop. Over Thanksgiving break I was able to work on the base and sample recording of 3 songs and was amazed at the flow of creation. My hope was to put out a mix tape by Jan 1, 2011 – the anniversary of the Zapatista uprising…but it will have to be in 2011….perhaps along with Mujeres de Maiz’s Wombyn’s month (March 2011) or hopefully even sooner….stay tuned.
Another hope for this year was to self-publish a poetry book. I did a sample of one last year in Dec. 2009 which you can take a look at here (http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1038618 ) but would like to actually print and design a new book/booklet/chapbook with my poetry and perhaps CD with it…..plans have been in the works but 2011 will have to be the year.
I was also very thankful and honored to have celebrated the 13th anniversary of Mujeres de Maiz, a wombyn’s art collective I conceived and co-founded in 1997. Our celebration this year was amazing and our support and groundbreaking creative work for a new generation of women artists and activists continues to inspire me and so many more. Check us out at www.mujeresdemaiz.com for more information.
This year was also the first year I honored myself, my community and family even more spiritual and physical way and took part in ceremonies in a larger and deeper way with various commitments and prayer offerings. I am deeply thankful for the teachings, guides, veteran@s and elders and companer@s who have helped me along the way and all those on the road to healing, love, and action. I look forward to continue learning and sharing for the 7 generations….for it is not about me but those who have came before and those yet to come…it is my calling an responsibility and I do not take it lightly.
2010 marked the 20th anniversary of me becoming a vegetarian and 4 years sobreity….but I know I still can do more to take care of myself and my body. This year I released about 15 pounds with exercise, portion control, and taking care of myself and my eating habits a bit more, but I am happy about feeling more at home in my body again.
I am happy and grateful that my mom and dad and family and friends are healthy and doing good, especially my cousins and my amazing diosa daughter who amazes me every day.
For this upcoming cycle, I give thanks for all my blessings and wish each and everyone of my friends, family, and community a healthy, safe, and blessed new gregorian new year and much love and light on your path. Ustedes son mi otro yo….you are all my other me…inlakech and i love you!
